I just
started freelancing/started a business and I’m not sure what
to do next. What should I be doing?
Answer: Two of the most important things for a new
business entity (freelancers included) are its government
compliance and its recordkeeping. For example, if you are a
Sole Proprietor, you may need to file a DBA with the county.
If you just started an LLC, you need to register with the
State. Most locations require business licenses as well, and
if you have employees, there are additional filings, taxes,
and obligations to keep track of. Make sure you are
up-to-date and compliant with all the requirements for doing
business in your area. Additionally, it’s important to start
off on the right foot where your finances are concerned. It
is much easier to do things right from the beginning than
find yourself in an unfortunate financial or tax situation
where you have to go back and undo what you’ve done and
spend significant time, money, and resources fixing old
mistakes.
