I already have an accountant. Do I still need a bookkeeper?
Answer: A bookkeeper’s job, while in the same
realm as that of your accountant, is very different from an
accountant’s services. Accountants generally focus on
financial analysis, tax preparation, and strategizing, while
a bookkeeper focuses on the day-to-day recordkeeping.
Accountants often charge $200+ an hour for their time, and
often a large portion of that time is spent “cleaning up the
books” and doing the job that a bookkeeper does for a
quarter of the price. A good bookkeeper will be able to work
with your accountant, providing the data that your
accountant needs in the format that works best for him or
her, as well as interpreting an accountant’s recommendations
and helping the client implement those recommendations on a
practical level.
